A Message from the LCFEF Task Force

The local papers have been bursting recently with news and views about the state of the La Canada Unified School District and the impact that the expected future budget cuts will have on our schools. Without the extension of the tax increases that Governor Brown had sought, our schools must trim an additional $2.4 million from next year's operating budget. In this worst-case scenario, the district office and the School Governing Board have affirmed that the changes must occur. Read more.

RALPHS & VONS SHOPPERS: Have You Registered Your Cards?

Some families should recently have received a letter from the PTA's Ralphs/Vons/eScrip coordinator, Lori Moody, asking you to register your Ralphs and Vons club cards to benefit the PTA. Those families whose cards are already registered did not get this letter. Please return these letters to school with your registration information, or email Lori with the information. If your cards are registered, Ralphs and Vons pays the PTA a percentage of your purchases, at no cost to you. Thank you to the families and staff who have registered their cards. Contact Lori at lori.moody@ymail.com or 818-952-5645.

New Cafeteria Payment System - April 2011

If you have not created a debit account for your child and would like to do so, information on how to register for an account will be found @ www.lcusd.net home page under "Food Services - Lunch Pre-Pay". Here you will be able to load money into your account, as well as set spending limits in the cafeteria. Our food service personnel will be in-serviced on this new system and will be sending any applicable updates.

Important Pertussis Update!

To the Parents of La Canada High School Students 7 - 12:

There has been at least one case of pertussis (whooping cough) in La Canada High School. Pertussis can spread through the air when people cough. It often starts like a common cold which gets worse and worse over 1-2 weeks. People with pertussis have coughing spells that may last several seconds. As they catch their breath at the end of each coughing spell, they may gasp loudly ("whoop") and vomit or choke.

The vaccine usually protects against pertussis, but sometimes even immunized children can get pertussis. Pertussis is treated with antibiotics. Antibiotics can also prevent the spread of pertussis to others.

Activities being implemented to help stop the spread of pertussis in your child's school (or other facility) include:

· Exclusion of symptomatic (coughing) children or asymptomatic unimmunized children, who are close contacts to a person with pertussis from school until they have received 5 days of appropriate antibiotics, or exclusion for 21 days if they choose not to take antibiotics.

The LA County Department of Public Health will notify your school's nurse or administration if one of these actions needs to be taken for your child.

Families are encouraged to assure that all family members, children and adults, have completed the vaccination series against pertussis. If your child is not up-to-date with their whooping cough vaccinations, he or she should get vaccinated.

Children younger than 7 years of age who have not received 5 doses of DTaP vaccine should be vaccinated.
Pre-teens (11-12 years of age), teens, adults, and anyone 7 years and older who is not fully immunized should receive one dose of the Tdap vaccine.

If your child does not have health insurance or a regular health care provider, visit www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/ip or call the Los Angeles County Information Line at 2-1-1 for referrals to no-cost and low-cost vaccination providers.

To learn more about whooping cough, visit www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/pertussis/default.htm or www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/ip. If you have any other questions or concerns, please contact your regular health care provider.

If your child begins to have a cough by March 24, 2011, please have your child seen by your doctor or clinic right away and take this letter with you as proof that your child may have been in contact with someone who has whooping cough. If you have questions, please call Alex Pizano, PHN at (818) 500-5760 or Danielle Chandler, District Nurse at (818) 952-4226.

Sincerely,

Elise Pomerance, MD, MPH Danielle Chandler, RN, BSN

TEEN MOVE FAIR - Tuesday, Feb. 8th 1:30-3:30 in the Quad (or café in case of rain)

Mark your calendars and plan for your teen to stop by the annual Teens MOVE Fair on February 8th. MOVE stands for Many Opportunities for Volunteering and Employment. It's a fun, after-school event where about 30 different organizations come and share their programs and job opportunities with our local teens. Students stroll from table to table, learn about all kinds of after-school and summer jobs and volunteer positions, and meet employers and program leaders who are eager to meet them! Even if your teen is not looking for a position right now, it's a great chance to see what's out there. All students are encouraged to come. Entertainment and prizes (i.e., free stuff) add to the fun! MOVE is brought to us by our local YMCA, the Community Center, the City of La Canada Flintridge and the LCHS PTSA. It's free and open to the community. Spread the word!

If parents can help in any way please contact:

LCHS Cafeteria - 11/16/2010

The PTA Council Nutrition Committee and School Nutrition Plus (SNP) are excited about the positive response to the new scratch-cooked entrées! Last month our cafeteria featured a delicious homemade chili. In November, the students can look forward to a Thanksgiving feast with mashed potatoes, turkey gravy and a homemade persimmon apple crumble made with organic persimmons from a farm in Fresno. To increase variety, the SNP Chefs are working on a scratch-cooked Asian noodle dish for December/January. In the produce area, we are switching to organic oranges. Our "fresh-picked" offerings have already included pluots, black plums, organic grapes, and jujubes, which are Chinese dates. If your child doesn't usually buy a cafeteria lunch, now is a good time to give it a try! For more information, and to learn how you can reduce your carbon footprint through food, check out SNP's newsletter at www.schoolnutritionplus.com/snp-newsletter-nourishing-news . Questions??
