CJSF News – Attention 7 th and 8 th Grade Students:

Once again California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) welcomes students who have approximately a 3.5 GPA (it is actually based on a point system that is outlined below) and a good citizenship grade. CJSF is a state wide organization for those students of high scholastic accomplishments.

Each student is expected to be an active dues paying and participating member. Membership dues ($10) are paid when you apply. CJSF students are required to attend mandatory monthly meetings after school, and there is also a 10 hour community service requirement per semester. Those students accepted into CJSF for three semesters, meeting all requirements for grades, service and attendance at monthly meetings will receive a special seal on their eighth grade promotion certificate. 7 th and 8 th grade students are able to apply for the 2nd semester based on their 1st semester grades.

All meetings will be held in the cafeteria at 2:45 P.M. and typically last about 30 minutes. To apply you need to earn twice the number of points than courses in which you are enrolled and P.E. does not count (i.e. 6 classes will need 10pts). CJSF points are granted as follows: A = 3 points, B = 1 point, C – 0 points and D/F will exclude student from membership. Likewise a U in citizenship in any classes will exclude a student from membership. Anyone interested in running for seventh grade CJSF representative positions, please see Ms. Dalbeck.

Laws That Affect Teens / Students

Did you know that:

  • Kids can legally be out past curfew if they're participating in a religious, educational or political activity?
  • In developing a school dress code, parents must be involved in the decision-making process?
  • Parents are often liable when their kids damage, destroy or deface others' property?

These and other California laws that might concern children and their actions are explained in a VERY readable format in the 2007 version of Kids & the Law: An A-Z Guide for Parents. Topics covered include driving laws, drugs, alcohol, online predators, juvenile court, and much more.

Health Office Procedures

Here’s a quick reminder to parents regarding the procedures in the Health Office. A student must have a pass in order to go to the Health Office. If a student is not feeling well, the Health Clerk will take his or her temperature and ask about symptoms or ailments. With a fever or other verifiable illness, the parent or guardian is called to pick up the student. If the parent or guardian cannot be reached, the other emergency contact numbers are called. Students who are sent home with a fever must be fever free for twenty-four hours before they may return to school.

If a student does not have a fever or an outward sign of illness, they are allowed to rest in the Health Office for ten minutes, after which the Health Clerk will reevaluate his or her condition. If the student wants to go home, the office staff attempts to reach the parent or guardian. If the parent or guardian is not reached within twenty minutes and the student is not in distress, the student is asked to return to class until school personnel hear from the parent/guardian. Upon contact with the parent/guardian, it is their decision whether to pick up the student or have the student remain in class.

Students who are not in distress may not rest/remain in the Health Office for extended periods of time. We encourage all families to make sure that their telephone numbers and those of their emergency contacts on file with the school are correct and updated. The Health Office policies are designed to efficiently meet the health needs of our students while promoting the importance of students being present in their classes during instructional time.

Miss School? Need Homework?

If your child is out of school for one day, please refer to his/her agenda for upcoming assignments and tests. Another good resource for finding out homework information is to call a reliable student in the same small school. Also, many teachers have websites that can be accessed for assignments, and some teachers have weekly schedules that are sent home.

Please utilize all the tools at your disposal to access your child’s work and ask your child to speak with their teachers when they return from an illness. Homework assignments will only be gathered from teachers via the Attendance Office upon the third day of your child ’s absence from school.

Better Late Than Never

Please talk to students about traffic safety, especially at the end of the school day. The school has received concerns from drivers that students are running against the red light at Oak Grove Dr. and Foothill to catch the shuttle bus.

With the sun in the driver's eyes, it is not always easy to see people.

Please be cautious at all times and remember the old saying "Better late than never".

Please Pull Forward in 7/8 Turnaround

We have posted a big banner on the fence along the north side of the turn-around (adjacent to the baseball field). The banner reads: "Please Pull to Here." It seems that many parents stop in the middle of the turn-around area…right between the 7/8 bldg. and the IRC. While this is the spot that is closest to the buildings, it leaves the drop off length ahead vacant (which is about 4-5 lengths). By pulling completely to the end of the turn-around (where the new sign is posted) will provide a much more efficient pattern of unloading students. Everyone will benefit, even the students who get the additional exercise of walking 40 feet more.
